Rucker John's croissant

What’s New in Emerald Isle, NC?

Being a full-time resident of Emerald Isle, I get asked a lot “What’s New?”  Well, actually a lot is “new” to our family beach town.  The quieter winter months give an opportunity for new and existing local businesses to open, expand & remodel.

The buzz around Emerald Isle involves several family-owned businesses catered to our beach vacationers.

What’s New at Rucker Johns

You must check out the newly remodeled Rucker Johns Restaurant located in the Emerald Plantation.  You will not believe the interior transformation!  So fresh & inviting with hues of blues & grays.  I was so happy to hear the menu stayed the same though.  I couldn’t imagine any improvements were needed to their tasty food – especially the salmon salad and warm, sweet croissants – my personal favorite.

While waiting for a table inside or outside on the deck at Rucker Johns, stop by the new Island Time Tavern located right next to RJs.  Lots of craft beers & select wines to be tasted while sitting outside on the deck.  Live music, karaoke, and DJS are scheduled throughout the spring, summer and fall.

what’s new at rucker johns is croissants

Being a dog lover, I was so excited for the opening of the K9 and Coffee Shop which allows coffee lovers to bring their furry family member inside for coffee (for human consumption only) while shopping for their needed pet supplies.  While out for a stroll, stop by & rest a bit on their covered porch located next to the Post Office on Emerald Drive.

You cannot miss a walk after dinner at the Bogue Inlet Pier.  The new store expansion with offices above is sure to please the fishermen and all those who love to see what’s biting.  Located at the Bogue Inlet Pier, the Surf’s Up oceanfront restaurant – Emerald Isle’s only waterfront dining venue – will open mid-summer.  The views are forever.

Lastly, the Islander Hotel has taken on a major expansion and remodeling project over the winter.  Expected to be completed in May, the oceanfront hotel will feature 20 new rooms, a new check-in lobby, a store for those things guests may have forgotten, a large 4000 square foot event room as well as a 1200 square foot conference room perfect for business meetings or smaller events.  The Islander is a popular oceanfront venue for those love birds ready to say “I do.”

As you drive across the hi-rise bridge this spring & summer, remember to leave your worries behind, take a deep breath & drive on island time to put your toes in the sand.  Shop local.  Life is simple in Emerald Isle and remember, “Nice Matters”.

A beach on the Crystal Coast

The Beach for all Seasons

The Beach for all Seasons

The Crystal Coast is more than just the beach. There are beautiful sites to see all year round. When planning your trip take some time to explore other areas off the island to visit while you’re here. Check out our Calendar of events for happenings. Our weather is mild year round and shoulder season rates are often times lower in cost as well. Here is some insight as to what can keep you busy during all four seasons

Winter in our area varies from year to year. More often than not we have mild winters. December and January often see temps in the 60’s as well as freezing temps and sometimes a day of snow. Just a local tip, if you come for a week you are likely to be in flip flops on Monday and wool socks on Friday depending. In these times you will have plenty of freedom, crowds are scarce, locals are friendly and you have many local favorites to yourself. Have you tried to go to El’s drive-in during the month of June or July? Its nuts (worth it, still nuts). In winter you can roll in and out without the crowds of people. So now you have gotten to experience 4 seasons in one week, on a budget, taking advantage of lower rental rates and even discounted pricing from one of our specials like early bird or if it was a last minute plan you received $100 off with the January promo. Either way, you got away from the hustle of your everyday, went to the beach and had it pretty much to yourself. Lucky you!

Oh Spring, also a great time to visit the coast. Especially late April and early May. Rates are still less expensive than summer and the beaches are still pretty empty. After March beach driving stops and people start taking advantage of an exceptionally warm day to venture back out to soak up some sun and shake their winter blues away. Colors are coming to life in the dunes and trees along the island, grass starts to get greener and everyone is getting ready for the summer season.

On to the Summer season, the most popular of all. I barely need to embellish on summer, its awesome. Days are longer beaches are full, the whole community just hums. Year after year new events spring up giving the masses more and more ways to keep entertained above and beyond the surf. When planning a summer trip to the coast be sure to plan ahead and take advantage of the savings like Early Bird. It’s 15% off if you book in the off season. Not only can you search our website but our call center is available for you if you would like the personal attention when booking. This group is very knowledgeable about the area and can help cater to your personal needs, wants and expectations.

Finally Fall! Temps are dropping out of the 90’s and beaches are starting to clear out. Fishing is amazing as well as the sunrises and sunsets. Annual events such as the North Carolina Seafood Festival are great draws to the area, as a tradition spanning 3 decades you can come enjoy local seafood and carnival rides as well as live music and artist vendors so you can take home a piece of Carteret county with you.

How to sell your home

Selling your Home

Inch by Inch Life is a Cinch

Your new year resolution may include making big changes, like selling your home for instance. This may be so you can downsize, upgrade or travel the world even. One thing you need to know going in to this venture is it is a team effort with you and a Real Estate pro, that is if you want a less stressful transaction. Selling your home in Spring or early Summer are traditionally good times to sell your home. So starting now will get you ready right on time. Here are a few things to add to your mini resolution list to achieve your major 2017 goal of selling a house.

  • Hire an Agent

    – Price Guidance

    – Neighborhood Knowledge

    – Handling Paperwork

    – Professional Networking

    Group picture edited and cropped

Clean blinds, ceiling fans, baseboards and under furniture.  Pack away knickknacks and de-clutter counter tops.  Steam carpets to remove dirt and pet odors and organize closets to utilize available space.

    – Hold a Garage Sale

  • Pump Up Curb Appeal

our curb appeal is the first thing potential buyers notice when searching for a new home, even when they visit without an agent and do a drive by. $400-$500 can return 4 times this amount when invested in landscaping

    – Trim bushes

    – Power Wash siding & sidewalks

    – Wash Windows

    – Freshly Paint Front Door

    – Purchase a new Doormat

The Art of Entertaining

expertly decorating your home during the holidays

1-garland

I cannot believe December is here with Christmas on its way! The holidays are one of my favorite times of the year. Of course, who isn’t excited for the holiday season? It is a time for giving (not just receiving, although I think anyone would be lying if they said they didn’t have a few items on their own lists), decorating, celebrating the season, and for some of us, hosting holiday parties!

I love being the hostess. I am a planner and perfectionist; which means I drive my husband crazy on a daily basis. When we entertain everything must be in order, look its absolute best, and for big events, decorated perfectly. Each year we scour the stores for new ornaments, decor, tableware, and anything else that catches our eye. I like for our home to feel cozy and festive.

While setting up for gatherings or parties, I like to have dedicated areas for everything. I roll in a bar cart to set up the liquor, mixers, glassware, and ice. The counter top bar becomes an horderves buffet while the dining room is set for dinner. Festive coasters decorate the coffee and end tables to invite drinks to sit on them (whether or not that actually happens is a different story in and of itself). The mantel and tree are lit and holiday music is played throughout the evening. And in true holiday spirit some disaster is bound to occur. In our home it usually consists of Simon (our cat) jumping on the table to try and get some tasty treats or Scout (our dog) running for a toy, mauling over someone in her hot pursuit, and red wine spilling because said guest is now on the floor.

pillows sevan-collection-knitted-christmas-design-throw-blanket-c2d157c6-d501-45e8-8431-41ee3ca14bee_600throw reindeer

While red is not normally in my color wheel, there is something about the vibrant color that screams HOLIDAYS to me. I like to add a touch with red throw blankets, pillows, and place-mats. To break up the vibrancy of the color I like to add white and light beige undertones. This is a drastic change from my normal gray and blue/green hues

My main issue from year to year is my dining room table. I always feel my center piece is just a little too generic or not keeping with the rest of my theme. However, this year I plan to master it. My center piece will be full of garland and pillar candles. My table will pop with the place settings and still keep some of its coastal cottage charm with the nautical napkin rings below. With the red place-mats, white china, and red napkins my table will be festive and inviting!

My home is about to be holiday ready, just a few more items are needed for it to be 100% and entertainment to begin. In fact, in crazed perfectionist fashion, I am going to rope my husband into finishing my masterpiece today! Seasons Greetings!

hello

I grew up on our beautiful Crystal Coastal and have enjoyed the beaches, boating, and atmosphere of coastal living for much of my life. For 6 years I lived in Charlotte, NC where I worked as a Pediatric Cardiology RN; however, my husband and I decided Charlotte was not for us anymore and it was time to move back to the coast.

I have always had a knack for helping others whether it was on mission trips or my career as a nurse. I am excited to be helping others from a different perspective now and hope I can be of assistance to you in finding your paradise on the Crystal Coast.

2016 NC Seafood Festival

the 2016 seafood festival was a hit!

2016 NC Seafood Festival

On the last day of the 2016 NC Seafood Festival this year, we find comfort in being some of the last stragglers, soaking up all the goodness that is going to the festival with fewer crowds. Especially when you’re traveling with a stroller. We were welcomed with the Flounder Fling. This was the first time I witnessed something so strange yet so entertaining. And this guy to the right was a ham and very good at flinging a fish!

Immediately following this entertainment, my husband and I got down to the critical business….FOOD! Which seems to be the running theme of most of the content I write here on the Bluewater Vacation Blog. But what can I say? North Carolina has some fantastic delicacies. Don’t just take my word for it! You should book your weekly stay on the Crystal Coast and do a restaurant crawl. I promise you wouldn’t regret it… your waist might, but your mouth would love you forever.

Derrick started with fried Oreos, and I quickly scuttled down to an amazing seafood chowder made by Michael’s Seafood in Carolina Beach, NC., which I discovered you could order online or visit your local Harris Teeter.

The music couldn’t get any better on the last day of the 2016 NC Seafood Festival with the Chairmen of the Board. Jackie Wilson – (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me)

Must-Sees at the NC Seafood Festival

Another must-see while at the 2016 NC Seafood Festival is the wine row. Try tons of samples of wine and find your favorite to take home. Also, you can’t leave without strolling through the homemade crafts and finding early Christmas gifts for loved ones. There are also rides…how could I forget? If you have a little daredevil in ya, try a few of the carnival rides and games.

There is something for everyone at the NC Seafood Festival. Take advantage of the many activities at various times, including evening concerts. Visit ncseafoodfestival.org/ for next year’s shindig. – Guest Authored by Buewater’s Jay White

Let’s Hear From You!

Have you ever been to the NC Seafood Festival? If so, what year did you attend, and what was your favorite part? Don’t miss our monthly Crystal Coast calendar of events for more local festivals and fresh events.

Goodbye summer, hello autumn

Building A Dream

As the summer sun is sinking into sunset, fall comes to the beaches of North Carolina in Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach. The routine has slowed and the “normal” pace of life returns. Our commute to the beach is quicker and the days are shorter. Soon the holidays will be upon us as well as another new year. For now, we watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean and relax with our toes in the sand.

As a realtor our season is just beginning. I find with the fall and holidays we always meet the clients that are looking to purchase land and begin to plan for that “dream home”. It happens often, more than you would think. I always enjoy these clients as they are beginning to finally realize their dreams of having a beach home to retire to. Building a home in an area you don’t live isn’t as hard as you would think.

After finding that perfect property, drawing a dream home and deciding on a builder, most begin to scratch their heads and say “why did I think we should do this”. Stop, relax and take the advice of many that have gone before you. I find the following tips to come in handy.

number-1First, find a reliable realtor that knows the area, has lived here and can be available to assist in the process. Find a lot that will accommodate the type of home you are looking for. Views are important, but if it is in an area (which most are) that you need a septic tank, be sure you have the permit and that it will accommodate your new house. If there isn’t a permit, then you have to make application for this which could take up to 120 days to complete. No home for next summer at this point. (very important if you‘re planning to come to the beach next season).

twoNext, find a draftsman or architect to draw your home, be assured that the one you got out of that homes magazine will not work! Be sure you are taking into account for home placement for a great view and location. This one step can make the process more difficult for the builder and new homeowner, if not done properly. You inevitably will want to change a wall or add a closet so it is important to discuss all of these things with the draftsman, before rather than after it is finalized

three-blueMost important is the choosing of the builder. Bluewater Builders can be there to assist. Anthony Futral has the experience, knowledge and patience to help you make those dreams come true. He has the vision and capability to help you to design the perfect home that will enable you to enjoy your dream home. If the builder is not one who is experienced in building on the island, you may run into issues with permits and delays which will just make it extend much longer for the building process. Bluewater Builders has been building Emerald Isle for over 20 years, a great choice to help the process go smoothly.

So, it you are the one that is interested in starting the process of creating your “dream retirement home” this is the plan.

Call Bluewater Real Estate for your personalized realtor to help you start the process. Allow them to introduce you to Anthony with Bluewater builders and get the process started. Fall is a wonderful time in Emerald Isle. In order to be in a home by summer you should start that process immediately. Give us a call or view our available lots at today.

Next fall you can enjoy the sun setting over the Atlantic Ocean, toes in the sand and the enjoyment of being a local on the island.

We look forward to calling you our neighbors.
