Spruce Up Your Garden
Want to spruce up your garden to achieve your Spring gardening dreams? We’ve put together some tips to help you get your garden in tip-top shape for Spring. Do these things to prepare your garden and you’re sure to have a happy, healthy, and harmonious garden all season long!
Step 1
You need a somewhat blank canvas. Clearing out your space is a two step process. First, you’ll need to get rid of everything that doesn’t please you: get rid of pesky weeds and anything you feel isn’t thriving. The elements of your garden NEED to spark joy! Once you’ve gotten rid of all the undesirables, it is time to tidy up! This is your chance to clean out your growing containers, repair your flower beds and trellises, and add mulch where you need to replenish!
Step 2
Create your vision! You can do this in your head or take it a step further and create a vision board: Pinterest is a great haven to compile your ideas! This is your opportunity to think about what has worked well in the past and what hasn’t. If this is your first time sprucing up your garden or even if you are starting a brand new garden from scratch, this is a great time to research different types of plants and flowers and determine what has the chance to thrive in your environment. I love proteas, but living in a mild climate doesn’t give these beauties much room to grow, so back to the drawing board!
Step 3
Ready your garden! Add fresh compost, test the quality of your soil, make adjustments to your irrigation system, add a trellis if you plan to plant climbing varieties, make some raised flower beds, etc.
Step 4
Make sure to plant when the time is right! The outside temperature is a great guide to indicate when it is time to get planting!
Step 5
Whether you are raising your own plants from seed to sprout or purchasing them at your nearby Lowe’s store, give your plants some time to get used to your garden environment. Put seedlings under a covered patio or even an umbrella for the first couple of days before introducing them to the soil. Then, when it is time to plant, don’t forget the most important thing: HAVE FUN WITH IT!
