We are Lorna and Ray Riggs, and we have lived and worked on the Crystal Coast since 1989. I (Ray) grew up in New England, where I spent most summers in and around boats. I went to college in Vermont and trained as a Physician Assistant in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lorna went to high school and college and trained as a Physician Assistant in North Carolina. We met in Winston-Salem, where both of us happened to have great careers as PAs. We also happened to share a passion for running, skiing, water sports, reading, cooking, and eventually, each other, so we got married.
About Lorna and Ray Riggs
Back in the late 1980s, we did a lot of traveling and saw wonderful places all over the world and got the itch to move. We took a leave of absence from our jobs and spent a few months out west in ski country and then spent three months in Southeast Asia. Finally, we tried the coast of North Carolina and settled on Carteret County. We loved all its natural attributes and knew we would fit in with the hard-working, boat-loving locals. Against the advice of many, we quit our jobs, sold our house, and moved to Emerald Isle, NC.
In the early 1990’s we built a home in Emerald Isle and a retail and rental business called Island Rigs in Indian Beach. That business supported us while introducing a generation of locals and visitors to the world of windsurfing and kayaking. The ocean, Bogue Sound, and the pristine estuaries of Carteret County were perfect venues. In 2002 we bought an oceanfront half duplex as a vacation rental unit. It proved to be a great investment and spawned our interest in the real estate business. Lorna got a real estate license in 2005, and after being her assistant for a decade I got mine. We joined Bluewater as a team in 2016.
